Business / Investment Migration

Business Innovation and Investment Programme (BIIP) is the Australia’s business/investment migration programme which encourages people who have a demonstrated history of success in innovation, investment and business to settle in Australia and contribute significantly to Australia’s innovation system and economy.

 

Visa options and migration pathway

There are two pathways available.  Most of the migrants choose to enter Australia using a provisional visa for a minimum of four years. After satisfied certain criteria in relation to their business or investment activity in Australia, they are able to apply for permanent residence. 

As an alternative pathway, business migrants who have high level business skills or have obtained funding from an Australian venture capital firm can apply for a business talent visa which can get direct permanent residency. 

 

Basic requirements

The following are the common requirements under the BIIP: 

  • Nominated by a state or territory government or Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
  • Invited to apply
  • Meet the additional requirements of your related stream
  • Aged 55 or under
  • Good health and character

 

This is a permanent visa which available to business talent in two main streams:

  • Significant Business History stream: for existing business owners who have ownership interests in a sizable business and want to do business in Australia
  • Venture Capital Entrepreneur stream: for people who have sourced venture capital funding from a member of the Australian Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL).​
  • Only available to those who has nominated by a state or territory government 
  • You have to submit your EOI and get invitation from the state/territory before you can apply for the visa

  • This  is part of the Business Innovation and Investment Programme. The visa is a temporary visa and is valid for around four years. There are five streams of visa under this subclass:
    • (A) Business Innovation – for people with business skills who want to establish, develop and manage a business in Australia
    • (B) Investor – for people who would like to make an investment of at least AUD 1.5 million in an Australian state or territory government
    • (C) Significant Investor – for people who would like to invest at least AUD 5 million and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia
    • (D) Premium Investor –  for people who would like to invest at least AUD 15 million in complying premium investments in Australia and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia
    • (E) Entrepreneur – for people who have a funding agreement from a third party for at least AUD 200 000 to undertake a complying entrepreneur activity 
  • You should meet both DIBP and nominated state/territory criteria

Benefits

  • Pathway for permanent residency is available  
  • Age requirement is lower than that of skilled migration – you can still apply if you are between 45 and 55

  • You can apply only if you fulfill the criteria of your original provisional visa  (i.e relevant stream of subclass 188 or visa subclass 444)
  • You have been nominated by an Australian state or territory or by Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
