Changes to skilled migration on 1 July 2017

Certain changes to skilled migration programme were made on 1 July 2017. The article below summarises the key changes.

1. Max. age requirement is lowered to 45

From 1 July 2017, visa applicants must be under age 45 at the time of invitation for the following visa subclasses – 189, 190 and 489.

2.  A new steam of 189 for New Zealand Citizen 

  • hold a Special Category (subclass 444) visa
  • no age limit
  • have been usually resident in Australia continuously for five years
  • have started residency in Australia on or before 19 February 2016
  • the applicant must earn above the income threshold for each of the four completed income years prior to lodging an application (unless claiming an exemption)

3.  Around 2% increase in most of the visa application charges
